Staircases, steps and Artists
It is not only architects who design staircases, but stairs and steps have always been a source of inspirations to artist: Piranesi, Braque, William Blake, Sam-Szafran, and Fernand Leger, and recently Rachel Witheread, Edward Burn Jones, all took inspiration from staircases.

Atelier 109 abroad this year ?
We are hoping to get involved in stonework for bow windows (restoration and complete new ones) in the Leicester area. We have also had some interest for the supply of our stone cantilever staircases in Ireland, in the US and Canada (Montreal and Toronto).
We are planning to broaden our horizon by marketing our fireplaces and staircases in Norway and Denmark. We might even try to market our marble and limestone staircases and stonework for the Quatar and Abu Dhabi region in order to promote the use of French limestone and stone in contemporary architecture.
If you would like to receive examples of our latest designs please email us a request and we will send you a PDF brochure.

October 2010- marble staircase
The craftmen from Atelier 109 Ltd have been working in stone masonry and involved in retrofiting a marble staircase. We have been quoting for some work retrofitting spiral and straight flight stone staircases.
September 2010 - Palladian staircase and spiral staircase completed in Warwickshire
And another one: a massive palladian staircase, scattered soffite, 3 flight of French limestone steps with astragale. Plus a spiral staircase wrapping around a stone core in a circular stone tower. All this was completed for a private residence in Warwickshire this month.
We will also be fixing a fabulous load-bearing stone staircase, landing and stone balcony in London next to Holland Park, home of so many gorgeous neo-Georgian houses.
Next to Hampstead, we will be fitting a new contemporary stone staircase with a complete new soffite design, looking like a folded piece of paper. One or two stone spiral staircases are on the program for the next few months.
August 2010 - New Exhibition Area open
Atelier 109 Ltd now has a new exhibition area to show the range of stone available, from Portland Perryfield, from Albion quarry, Jordan whitbed and basebed used for cantilevered stone staircases to the Saint Maximin limestone used for stone fireplace in natural stone. The exhibition allows us to illustrate the different soffite available: smooth, straight, ogee etc… Most of the models are designed for a straight stone staircase but are easily used for a spiral stone staircase.
Again we are using new stone, such as Mirabelle stone, mocca cream, Botticino and Jerusalem stone. We are looking at Chandore stone and Cabouca stone. We are aiming to demonstrate how superior the natural stone is compared to rather crude reconstituted stone or cast stone.
We will be soon exhibiting some stone mullion windows and stone fireplaces, stone door frames and stone pediments or cornices. Atelier109 Ltd staff ( plus friends and partners from Drafex stone fitting) took part in the Charity Dragon Boat Race in Cambridge to raise money to EACH charity. Unfortunately, we finished 23 rd of this Cambridge leg. We hope we will do better in the Cambridge area for all the stone work there: porticos, windows doors and fireplaces in local limestone, French limestone, Portland limestone, Jordan whitbed and basebed.
July 2010 - creation of stonework models
To keep on demonstrating the range of possibilities for natural stone, Atelier 109 Ltd, specialist in stonework and stonemasonry products, have created models in the old tradition of the gothic , renaissance and classical and even palladian architecture styles. Many of thess models have survived in cathedral workshops or contractors' archive rooms.
We are currently working on some models of spiral stone staircase and helicoidale stone staircases (using Portland limestone, Jordan whitbed and basebed). This modelling process allows the stone masons working on the pre-project to spot any potential production problems and to improve the final design.
We are also producing a stone frame window, architrave and cornice as a stone replica.

We are soon to release a new type of spiral staircase for use in contemporary settings.
