"" Monty Don's Mastercrafts program featured Atelier 109 , as master stonemasons,
on BBC2 at 9 pm on Friday the 19th of March.

 

As a huge fan of traditional crafts, Monty Don presents Mastercrafts, a programme celebrating six of the traditional crafts that built our nation and its heritage.

Monty DonAs he explains: "It takes four to five years to train properly as a stonemason." The programme follows 3 novices during a six-week intensive course as they learn the foundations of the craft - everything from quarrying their own stone to intricate carving.

As specialists in stonemasonry and cantilever stone staircases, Atelier 109 was invited to appear on the programme to demonstrate modern and traditional stone masonry techniques.

Pierre Bidaud, master stonemason at Atelier 109 said:

"Atelier 109 Ltd, specializing in cantilever and bespoke stone staircase was visited by the presenter a month ago and asked to illustrate modern stone masonry techniques.

I explained how from design to fitting of any new build stone work, Atelier 109 Ltd mixed traditional methods and up to date technology.

It was a pleasure to have the whole film crew, sharing our love of natural limestone, explaining how superior it was to reconstitued stone for creating cantilever staircases and other structural stone elements.

We talked about the biggger role of computer in the drafting and setting out, how we have fitted our stone stairwell and steps in London and abroad, following the Palladian tradition."
